Painting and decorating FAQs

Practical information about quotations, preparation, products, disruption, moisture and exterior planning.

Quotes and planning

Before work is booked

Do you visit before preparing a quotation?

Where practical, we arrange a site visit so we can see the surfaces, understand access and protection needs, and agree the scope and finish. Photos are useful at the enquiry stage, but some projects still need an in-person assessment before a fixed quotation can be prepared.

How quickly will I receive a written quotation?

For a standard project, Decor Plast aims to issue a written quotation within approximately one hour after the site visit has finished and all information needed for pricing has been received. Larger or unusual projects can take longer where access prices, specialist materials or further investigation are needed.

Is the price fixed?

The written quotation is a fixed price for the agreed scope. If hidden defects are uncovered or you request extra work, the additional scope and cost are discussed before that work goes ahead.

What should I include in my first enquiry?

Send the project postcode, rooms or elevations, surfaces involved, current condition, access constraints and preferred timing. Wider photographs show context; close-ups help explain cracks, peeling, stains or detailed woodwork.

Preparation and products

Building a suitable finish

Who supplies the paint?

That is agreed during the quotation. Decor Plast can recommend and supply suitable trade products, or work with a client-supplied product where it is appropriate for the surface and expected finish.

How should I prepare before work starts?

Please remove small valuables and personal items where possible. Furniture, floors and adjacent fittings are then moved or protected as agreed. Any special access, parking, alarm or building-management arrangements should be shared before the start date.

Can you work in an occupied home?

Yes. The work can be sequenced room by room, with clear discussion about drying time, access and daily clean-downs. The practical plan depends on the size of the project, the products used and how the rooms need to remain in use.

What if stripping or sanding reveals more damage?

Some defects are hidden by wallpaper, filler or old coatings. If the exposed condition falls outside the written scope, the options and any additional cost are discussed before extra work is carried out.

Living with the work

Access, curing and conditions

Does paint solve damp or mould?

No. Decoration can only begin once the source has been assessed and the surface is suitably dry and stable. Stain blockers and appropriate coatings can help with the final decorative system, but they do not repair an active leak, condensation problem or other underlying defect.

What is the difference between drying and curing?

A coating may feel dry before it has reached its full hardness. Freshly painted doors, shelves and other high-contact surfaces should be treated carefully during the curing period stated for the chosen product.

Can exterior work go ahead in any weather?

Exterior products need suitable temperature and moisture conditions. The schedule may move if rain, damp surfaces, strong wind or unsuitable temperatures would compromise preparation or the finish.

Do colours and products need to be final before the visit?

No. Early preferences are helpful, but practical guidance on sheen, cleanability and surface suitability can form part of the discussion. Final choices should be agreed before products are ordered and the programme depends on them.
